Sixth Grade Course Description
Literacy:
The course of study for Sixth grade Literacy curriculum focuses on analyzing the elements of literature and the writer’s craft through mentor texts in order for students to develop voice and style in their own writing. Analysis of how text is affected by writer’s purpose and point of view is an essential part of this course. As a result, students will be able to evaluate and appreciate various forms of fiction and non-fiction. Masterful use of the conventions of language will enhance the quality of how students express themselves both verbally and in writing.
Math:
Developmentally, adolescents are learning to make responsible decisions, both academically and socially. Learning to think through a problem, its elements and features, and selecting the best solution among a myriad of possibilities is the goal of this Sixth grade mathematics course. One way to build decision-making skills is through problem solving. Problem solving requires applying one’s learning to new and unfamiliar tasks. Problem solving turns the unfamiliar situation into one of familiarity. That’s the point of learning to factor, regroup, rename, or simplify because those skills will be called upon concretely and abstractly in everyday life. Students will independently use their learning of operations, fractions, decimals, percent, ratios, proportions, geometry, measurement, probability and data displays to connect these skills in planning and executing various activities.
Social Studies:
In our Sixth Grade Social Studies curriculum, students will examine the development of the United States and its diverse culture from 1850 to approximately 1920. They will examine and discuss how economics, politics, civil rights, and religious beliefs have and do lead to conflict amongst people and countries. Students will analyze the actions and events of people and the government during this time period. Students will be actively engaged in critical thinking and communication skills and will continue to develop their sense of empathy towards others.
Science:
In our Sixth grade Science curriculum, the students will be studying and understanding the complexities of our world. They will come to appreciate the necessary steps involved in the scientific process. They will explore some basic components of physical life science, earth science, and life science. This will consist of a study of energy, forces and motion; Earth's dynamic systems; and the structure and function of cells. They will come to the understanding that all of these studies of science revolve around the idea of interconnecting systems, and if any part of these systems is altered or destroyed, it will have a detrimental effect on our lives
