• Welcome to our NWEA MAP Growth Webpage!

    Our Journey

    • During the fall of 2020, the Elementary Principals, Middle School Co-Principals, District Supervisors, and the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) met over the course of several meetings to discuss how we can objectively measure student performance in mathematics and reading (i.e. learning gaps) during COVID-19.
    • After meeting with representatives from different companies, we decided that NWEA MAP Growth was the best product to support our staff and students by identifying student learning strengths and areas of need.
    • We then shared what we learned about NWEA MAP Growth with our Curriculum Council Committee which was comprised of staff, supervisors, principals, and parents, and received positive feedback and support from that group.
    • Our Director of CIA then shared the information through our Superintendent of Schools, Director of Special Services, and two Board of Education members through the Education Committee and received positive feedback and support from the Education Committee.

Why Did We Choose NWEA MAP Growth?

    • The MAP Growth assessments are unique and adapt to students' responses to measure their skill level. If a student answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If a student answers a question incorrectly, the next one is less challenging.
    • MAP Growth assessments are aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and can be sorted by standard or topic when analyzing its reports.
    • The results will provide a more complete picture of what each student knows and is ready to learn — whether it is below, on, or above, or their grade level.
    • In addition, the MAP Growth assessments are not timed. Students generally need between 45 and 60 minutes when they take their first assessment.
    • Since MAP Growth assessments provide immediate and accurate information about each student’s learning, it’s easier for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan their instruction accordingly.
    • MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level.

When Did We Begin to Use NWEA MAP Growth?

    • After training our elementary teachers (grades 1-4), we successfully administered the NWEA MAP Growth Assessments in mathematics and reading in March 2021. In the late spring, we administered the NWEA MAP Growth Assessments to our elementary students for a second time. Each time we sent home a Family Report that clearly described how each student performed in mathematics and reading in terms of achievement (RIT score) and growth (after administering the spring assessment).
    • After training our middle school teachers at HBW (grades 5-8), we successfully adminstered the NWEA MAP Growth Assessment in mathematics and reading in June 2021.
