Mrs. Graziano graduated from Montclair State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education. She is starting her 24th year teaching in Verona. Her first year was spent teaching third grade at Brookdale Avenue School. The rest of her years were spent teaching at F.N. Brown School. Mrs. Graziano's Web Page
On this website you will get an overview of the second grade curriculum.
~FUNDATIONS~
Our weekly Fundations list contains 10 words from our second grade phonics curriculum. We learn closed, vowel-consonant-e, and open syllables. We also focus on vowel teams and r-controlled vowels. The list words will be practiced using various strategies to reinforce the skills taught each week. On Friday, the students will be tested on the skill of the week, not the list words.
~MATHEMATICS~
All second graders should continue to practice the basic addition and subtraction facts in order to gain speed and accuracy. This will also help in regrouping with larger numbers, which is an important part of the math curriculum. We will also spend time learning the 2, 3, 5, and 10 times tables.
~LANGUAGE ARTS~
Language Arts encompasses the areas of reading, phonics, grammar, and writing. Fundations will be used to cover the areas of phonmenic awareness, spelling strategies, and handwriting. The Readers Workshop model will be used to help students find just right books and apply various skills to the books they read. We will continue using the Writer's Workshop program in second grade. Students will write in various genres, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
