Update on Class of 2020 NJDOE Graduation Requirements

May 24, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians of Students in the Class of 2020,

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) has made an error in their communication with public schools as it relates to NJ high school graduation requirements and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC). This error is impacting public schools across New Jersey, not just Verona High School.

During the 2016-2017 school year, the NJDOE provided schools with a chart for graduation requirements as it relates to the State standardized assessment (PARCC). The chart of graduation requirements was included in our PARCC parent letter that we sent to parents in March 2018. On May 11, 2018, the NJDOE posted on its website that it had changed the Class of 2020 graduation requirements chart (see page 9 in the PARCC parent letter). On May 18, 2018, the NJDOE sent a clarifying email on this matter to all public school districts.

The New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) issued the following statement on May 23, 2018: “the Department acknowledges that a chart that it issued in the summer of August 2017, that has been utilized by school districts with parents and students, in fact, contained incorrect information according to the code N.J.A.C. 6A:8-5(f).

As a result, students in grade 10 are required to take every PARCC assessment he or she is eligible for until such time that both the Algebra 1 and English Language Arts 10 PARCC assessments are passed. As per the NJDOE, there are other pathways available to students in order to meet high school graduation requirements. However, a student must take all PARCC assessments he or she is eligible for in order to qualify for these pathways. Please click the following link for more details on these NJDOE requirements.

The make-up PARCC assessments for Verona High School students will be held between Tuesday, June 5 through Friday, June 9, 2018. If your child is unavailable during these make-up testing dates, we will have additional make-up assessment opportunities in Summer 2018. The summer make-up testing dates will be communicated once we receive the testing window from the NJDOE.

Please understand that our goal is to ensure that every student will be eligible for graduation as per the NJDOE graduation requirements. Therefore, we highly recommend your child participate in make-up testing so that he or she will be eligible to meet the NJDOE graduation requirements in order to be eligible to receive a NJ high school diploma.

During the week of May 29 - June 1, parents will receive an email from your school counselor as to whether your child has satisfied his or her NJDOE PARCC testing high school graduation requirements based on this information. If you do not receive an email from your school counselor by Friday, June 1st, please contact Mrs. Newman at the high school counseling department at (973) 571-2029 ext. 1015. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
