Ms. O’Neill began her teaching career as a Head Start Teacher in Jersey City almost 30 years ago. A graduate of St. Peter’s College, she didn’t realize she wanted to be a teacher until she worked in a pre-school one summer and felt at home. She began taking certification courses and received her certificates in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. She taught for five years in Jersey City and received her Masters Degree in Special Education from Jersey City State Teachers College and then worked as an Education Coordinator at the North Hudson Head Start Program in North Bergen. During that time she had her first daughter, Meaghan, and stayed home with her for a year and a half. After three years in North Bergen, Ms. O’Neill took another few years off to stay home with Meaghan and her second daughter, Caitlin. When Caitlin was three, Ms. O’Neill returned to teaching, this time in Verona where she taught in the Pre-School Intervention Program for half a day. After four years of working part-time, she was ready to begin full time teaching again, this time at Laning Ave School in the Kindergarten. This position only lasted one year, after which she began teaching in the self contained LLD class at Forest Ave School. Four years later, Ms. O’Neill took a leave of absence to teach full time at Kean University in Union. Two years and many experiences later, she returned to Forest Ave. School, as the Resource Center Teacher. Mrs. O’Neill feels fortunate that she has been able to do something she loves for almost thirty years.
