    Name: Doris Peim

    Professional Bio:
     
    Mrs. Peim came to our school as a Guidance Counselor after being at South Orange Middle School for ten years teaching Mathematics.  Once Mrs. Peim started teaching, she decided that she could better serve her students and their families as a Guidance Counselor.  Mrs. Peim is a graduate of C. W. Post College of Long Island University where she received a B. S. in elementary Education.  She went on to get an M. B. A. with a concentration in Marketing from Pace University and a M. A. in Counseling, Human Services and Guidance from Montclair State University. 
     
    Mrs. Peim enjoys working one - on - one with students and the interaction that that entails.  She is a good listener and is available for students over the four years at H. B. Whitehorne Middle School.  Mrs. Peim comes from a family of teachers and looks to her family for inspiration and support.  On a personal level Mrs. Peim enjoys spending time with her family, going to the theatre, reading, and cooking.
     
     
     
     

    Grade 5 Advisory Syllabus
    Course Description
    :
    The Advisory course covers self - esteem, study skills, listening skills, conflict resolution, tolerance, diversity, and bullying.  The Advisory course is one way of helping middle schoolers adjust to the changes that pervade their lives.  The Advisory course will promote a sense of belonging, trust,  and confidence which can help the middle school student feel secure enough to solve personal problems.  The Advisory course will also provide guidance in decision - making and the examination of alternatives to situations the student faces daily.

    Course Outline:
    Week 1 - Self Esteem
    Week 2 - Peer Pressure
    Week 3 - Study Skills
    Week 4 - Conflict Resolution
    Week 5 - Bullying
    Week 6 - Tolerance and Diversity

    The lessons will be taught through the use of worksheets, videos, stories, role plays, games and discussion.  Cooperative learning techniques will be utilize for most lessons.

    Course Requirements:
    Students will be expected to participate in discussions and complete all class activities.  Students will be graded on a Pass/Fail grading system.  The grade will be determined as follows: class participation, classwork, projects.

    The Advisory course covers our uniqueness, developing friendships, setting goals, decision - making, conflict resolution, bullying, different family structures, and career exploration.  The Advisory course will promote a sense of belonging, trust, and confidence, which can help the middle school student feel secure enough to solve personal problems.  The advisory course will also provide guidance in decision - making and the examination of alternatives to situations the student faces daily.

    Week 2 - Friendships
    Week 3 - Setting Goals/Decision - Making
    Week 4 - Conflict Resolution
    Week 5 - Bullying
    Week 6 - Family Structure/Career Exploration
